Unusually the hero, Tom Verney, is a young orphaned customs officer rather than the traditional smuggler and the title represents the difficult choices Tom has to make as he struggles to separate right from wrong and good law from bad. The title is also a homage to J Meade Faulkner whose 19th century novel Moonfleet is also set in the area of the Dorset coast around Weymouth and Portland and whose hero escapes up the Zigzag to the top of White Nothe. On Portland Tom struggles to manage his vicious commanding officer Lieutenant Overton, and is comforted by the charming Perle and her elusive brother Jacko.

But its is his chance meeting with Captain Thomas Hardy in Portesham which has the most profound effect on his life. The story describes fishing on Portland, a dramatic shipwreck and a rescue using the Manby Mortar. Besides being an excellent adventure story the book provides the reader with some reliable historical information.
